The thing about eating Insects

When I was at the market today, I couldn’t help but notice bucketful of green things in front of every vendor’s stall.  Nsenene season has arrived in full force.  I am still marveling at the act of eating a grasshopper.  Like any delicacy, the creature is caught and then more than likely cooked alive.  I’m a fallen vegan, and now devout vegetarian.  Seeing these beautiful animals still squirming in buckets and cardboard boxes was heartbreaking.  A part of me wanted to free them, a part of me was ridiculing my ethnocentrism and a part of me just wanted to gag.  In some cultures, grasshoppers have an elevated status.  They are revered for their spiritual significance in bringing longevity, happiness, good health, good luck, wealth, abundance, fertility, virtue etc. In Uganda they are enjoyed deep fried with garlic. Long Pause here.  To truly understand I will have to overcome my reservations and just try them…maybe.
